Areation
Aeration
Overview
Aeration is typically the first step in surface water pretreatment. Water is cascaded over stepped fountains or diffused air streams to maximize gas exchange. This process oxidizes iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide, preparing them for removal. It also frees dissolved carbon dioxide and volatile organics, improving pH and odor. Gentle mixing promotes oxygen saturation and helps destabilize colloids.
Benefits
- Oxidizes metals for easier removal
- De-gasses CO₂ and odorous compounds
- Increases dissolved oxygen
- Improves pH and reduces corrosivity
- Enhances water clarity
Applications
- Surface and groundwater treatment
- Pre-RO and ultrafiltration systems
- Industrial cooling tower feed water
